Somerset Wood Recycling to Reuse Timber from Historic Birnbeck Pier

Community Wood Recycling is pleased to share news of a new partnership supporting the restoration of Birnbeck Pier in Weston‑super‑Mare. Somerset Wood Recycling has signed an agreement to transform timber salvaged from the Grade II* listed pier into unique items that will help fund the site’s future.
Wood removed during restoration that can’t be reused on the pier will be crafted into high‑quality products for sale in the new shop planned for the Pier Master’s Cottage. All profits will go directly towards the pier’s ongoing maintenance, creating a sustainable, circular model for the project.
This work is supported by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
As part of the project Somerset Wood Recycling will offer four six‑month woodworking placements, including at least two for young people through the Youth Justice Service.
Director Tom Palmer said:
“We’re looking forward to giving new purpose to timber reclaimed from the pier, while creating opportunities for local people and making a small part of Weston’s heritage available for people to own.”
The initiative supports North Somerset Council’s Improving Weston programme, which aims to revive heritage sites, support local jobs, and strengthen the town’s year‑round economy.
